Puzzle 043 - [Audio]

[Audio/Action for the Layton House.]

[Luke's curled up on the couch with his Pokegear, wrapped in blankets while shivering with a high fever. He almost doesn't bother with trying to use the Pokegear, but he's desperate to know if he's suddenly dying of some mysterious illness and why so many people seem to be infected with this strange virus. Maybe there's been some news on a cure? He couldn't lose hope yet.

And he certainly couldn't spend the rest of his life looking like this.]

Y-you know I-I'm sure t-this will a-all pass soon. S-someone's working on a c-cure, right? S-so I'm s-sure we'll be b-better in no time - ah.

Achoo!

A-anyway, d-does anyone know the d-details on w-what this s-strange illness is? I - ah.

[Luke sniffles a bit. Don't you hate it when you think you have to sneeze and-]

ACHOOOOOOOOOOOOZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!

[A powerful surge of electricity lights up the entire house, which is accompanied by what almost sounds like an explosion. Several things break in the house, right before the house goes pitch black. Luke can only stare in horrified silence for a few seconds. Did he do that?!]

...Uh oh.

[Action.]

[Ashamed and scared that he just knocked out the electricity in the house, Luke wanders outside before he does anymore damage. He has a blanket wrapped around himself like a cloak, where only his face and fingers are visible - and his face and fingers are now an unhealthy yellow color, with his cheeks a very deep red.

But his biggest concern are the newly grown horns sticking from his head, which he's desperately trying to cover with the blanket. Long, black-tipped yellow horns are sticking from his head, resembling a certain Pokemon.

He sits outside for a moment on a grassy hill outside of Goldenrod. He'd like to go into the city itself but he's a little hesitant to go into a busy city looking like this - especially since he's not safe to be around right now. Those city lights are very alluring though...]

Ah...

Achoooozzzzzzztt!

[Another powerful surge of electricity from Luke creates a very noticeable beacon of light to his location. Anyone who decides to investigate the beacon of light will find a very sickly-looking and horrified Luke, who's surrounded by a bunch of charred and very unconscious bird Pokemon. Whoops.]

[There's a small scream and a small clang coming from the kitchen. She had been adding sugar to another mug of tea when the darkness startled her, and she found herself dropping her spoon on the counter. Whatever turned off the electricity... was definitely a lot stranger than her light flickering off in her room. But that wasn't normal.]

...what just...? Luke? Professor?

[Wait. The front door opened. Ditching the tea, Flora hurries towards the door to figure out who disappeared on her. That's when she spots him, her frightened little buddy surrounded by all the birds.] L-Luke!

[Luke spins around, eyes wide in panic.]

F-Flora, stay back-!

[And he sneezes again, although this time he just crackles with electricity. Still, he's scared of hurting her and jumps back anyway, struggling to keep his balance.]

[At the cackle, Flora squeaks and jumps back, but she ends up tripping over her blanket and falling onto the floor. In a worried defense, her own body lets off an electrical charge, and the lights in the house flicker for a second before returning the place to darkness.

She just stares.]

What's... what's going on?

[Luke just stares in dumbfounded surprise at the display. Flora had these powers too? The blanket slips off his head, his horns starting to poke out.]

...I-I think we j-just got super powers.

[And Flora just stares back. She's trying to take in the horns, the red cheeks, the fact that he somehow electrocuted the entire house, the fact that she just electrocuted something...

All of this makes her head hurt.]

We... I don't understand! How...?

[He makes a grab for the blanket, before realizing it was probably too late. He looks down, almost...ashamed?]

I don't know, Flora. Something's really, really wrong.

[Oh, Luke, don't make that face... As she sits up, she holds an arm back out to him.]

Come back inside. It's... just a puzzle we'll need to solve. What would the professor do in this case?

[He's hesitant to reach out to her, afraid of hurting her. But she's electric like him, right? That means she should be all right...

Before he can dwell on it too long, he finds himself taking her hand anyway.]

R-right, a puzzle. And the P-Professor wouldn't just leave a p-puzzle unsolved. S-so we have to d-do our p-part to help figure out the reason b-behind this mysterious illness.

This probably won't help much, but try and wear as much rubber as possible. Like gloves and boots. Maybe if the electricity can't exit through extremities then you won't... break anything else.

[He hears Luke and sees the flash before he sees the boy himself and, curious, follows the beacon straight to the other boy. Laughing a little, he pulls out his gear to send Luke a text as he approaches.]

Luke perks up, looking around. The blanket around his head slips, revealing his horns.]

[John gives a small wave, good guess Luke! How did you know he would be behind you?]

[Luke perks up as soon as he sees John, noting his new appearance. Feeling relief that he wasn't the only one going through strange mutations, Luke drops the blanket.]

H-hello John!

[He sniffs a little, hoping another sneeze wouldn't follow.]

I-I s-see you w-went through s-some changes too, huh?

Pschhh!

[Whoops. Didn't mean to spit quite that much...]

[After a moment, he bursts out laughing, not at Luke necessarily. Yes, that was lame but oddly it kind of helps him feel better about all this.]

[Luke doesn't know if John is laughing at him or not, but hey laughter is the best medicine!

Luke stifles a laugh in return.]

[He sniffs, feeling a powerful jolt through his whole body. It's so dark in the room that the only way he can see much of anything is from the bright lit screen of the Pokegear.]

Looks like you blew the power instead of your nose, kiddo.

I-I didn't mean to! Whatever it is I did, I didn't mean to do it!

[Kinda panicking right now because oh god what did he do. Is the Professor going to be mad at him?]

Whoa! Hey! Take it easy!

[He crackles with more electricity, still kind of upset.]

I just sneezed! How did...what if the Professor finds out? What if I do it again? I could really hurt someone!

[Luke takes a breath.]

Y-you're right. It's just...I knew I was sneezing pretty hard but not that hard!

Yeah, I don't think I've seen anybody sneeze that hard.

[Because that's clearly the biggest issue here. And speaking of issues, looks like Luke is preparing for another sneeze.]

[...Well, he didn't knock out the power in Goldenrod, but through the darkness there's a few sparks of electricity.]

... Okay, yeah, you're probably gonna wanna get that looked at.
